Andrew M. Thaler presents at Real Property Committee of Nassau County Bar Association

Andrew spoke to the Committee about the intersection of bankruptcy and real property law at the June meeting.

Andrew M. Thaler selected to serve on Chapter 11 Lawyers' Advisory Committee for EDNY Bankruptcy Court 

The Chief Judge of the Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District New York extended an invitation to Andrew Thaler to serve on the EDNY Chapter 11 Lawyers' Advisory Committee.  The Committee, comprised of select bankruptcy attorneys and judges, works to improve chapter 11 practice in the Eastern District of New York.  ​

Andrew M. Thaler to Present at New York State Bar Association Landlord & Tenant Update

On May 16, 2018 Andrew will make a presentation for the NYSBA Real Property Law Section and Committee on Continuing Legal Education on Rights of Landlords and Tenants in Bankruptcy Cases.  The program will held at the Melville Marriott 1350 Walt Whitman Rd. Melville NY.

Andrew M. Thaler recognized for Pro Bono Legal Service

On Wednesday evening April 18, 2018 the Nassau County Bar Association, in collaboration with Nassau Suffolk Law Services and The Safe Center hosted an Access to Justice Recognition reception at the Nassau County Bar Association to show appreciation to firms and individuals who have performed exemplary pro bono service to the community. Andrew M. Thaler was recognized for his work with the pro bono bankruptcy clinic which he participates in and helped form over 28 years ago. The clinic screens indigent persons for bankruptcy eligibility and provides free legal services to qualified individuals that enables them to obtain an economic "fresh start'.

Andrew M. Thaler Radio Interview "Is Chapter 7 Personal Bankruptcy For You?" to be broadcast April 4, 2018. 

Last month I was interviewed by "Law You Should Know" radio host Kenneth Landau on "Is Chapter 7 Personal Bankruptcy For You?" The interview will air on Nassau Community College radio station WHPC 90.3 at 3:00 on Wednesday April 4, 2018 and be re-broadcast at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday morning April 8. Among the topics discussed:
When should you consult with a professional about personal bankruptcy?
What will a bankruptcy attorney ask you?
What questions should your bankruptcy attorney be able to answer?
You will learn (i) what debts will be discharged; (ii) what property can be retained; (iii) what is the Means Test and will I qualify for bankruptcy relief; (iv) how will bankruptcy affect my family members; (v) what is the difference between chapter 7 and 13 bankruptcy and more.

Andrew M. Thaler Obtains Certification as FSLA Mediator
​On September 28, 2016 Andrew M. Thaler successfully completed 7 hours of Fair Labor Standards Act Mediation Training conducted by the ADR Department of the United States District Court of the Eastern District of New York and the Federal Bar Association Eastern District of New Chapter. He is now qualified to accept federal court assignments as Mediator in wage and hour disputes. Mr. Thaler continues to serve as Mediator in commercial dispute matters.

Andrew M. Thaler Celebrates 25 Years as a Chapter 7 Trustee

​The Firm congratulates Andrew M. Thaler for serving 25 years as a Panel Chapter 7 bankruptcy trustee for the Eastern District of New York. Over these past 25 years, Mr. Thaler has presided over approximately twenty five thousand bankruptcy cases, and Mr. Thaler dutifully presides over every single case as if it is his only one.

On March 23, 2015, Andrew M. Thaler was quoted in a Newsday article geared towards helping small businesses protect their interests when a client files for bankruptcy. Importantly, Mr. Thaler said that "[y]ou need to know your rights and be proactive if you want to protect your interests."
Andrew M. Thaler Selected to Serve as Member of Nassau County Bar Association's Alternative Dispute Resolution Promotional Council
The Alternative Dispute Resolution Promotional Council was formed to promote the Nassau County Bar Association's mediation and arbitration panels, which are available for use to resolve disputes in several different areas of law. Mr. Thaler is also a member of the mediation panel.

Andrew M. Thaler Selected for Hurricane Sandy Mediation Program
Andrew M. Thaler has been selected to serve as a mediator for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York's Hurricane Sandy Mediation Program. The program hopes to facilitate the resolution of the more than 800 cases currently pending between property owners and insurers in the Eastern District of New York.

Recent Engagements
On October 23, 2017 Andrew Thaler made a presentation to the Theodore Roosevelt American Inn of Court at a program titled "The Pitfalls of Landlord Tenant Law" at which Mr. Thaler discussed the intersection of landlord-tenant law and bankruptcy with a focus on the rights of tenants and landlords when either tenant or landlord files for bankruptcy protection. 
  • On July 18, 2017 Andrew Thaler made a presentation to the Long Island Chapter of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants on Fraudulent Conveyances and Preferences in bankruptcy proceedings including a discussion of the elements plaintiffs need to establish to successfully prosecute avoidance actions and defenses available to defendants.
  • In December 2016 Andrew Thaler was selected to serve on the Eastern District of New York Local Bankruptcy Rules Committee whose 10 month mission is to review each local rule to assess whether its language and intent are clear and to determine whether amendments are necessary in light of recent amendment to the Federal Bankruptcy Rules. The Committee is chaired by the Honorable Louis A. Scarcella U.S. Bankruptcy Judge EDNY. Committee members include Assistant U.S. Trustee Christine H. Black and 8 prominent bankruptcy practitioners.
On September 22 2016, Andrew M. Thaler was sworn in as Director and Chair of Theodore Roosevelt Inn of Court's Mentor Program.
  • On November 19, 2015, Andrew M. Thaler lectured at Westchester for Sterling Education Services on Bankruptcy as it relates to Real Property Law. That same night, Andrew M. Thaler led a discussion on "considerations when taking in a new client" for the Attorney Round Table Dinner.
  • ​​On October 29, 2015 Andrew M. Thaler, in connection with the Nassau County Pro Bono Day, provided free legal advice to the public on bankruptcy and related areas of the law.
  • On October 7, 2015, Andrew M. Thaler, former Chair of the Nassau County Bar Association, Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee, served as a panelist with the Honorable Alan S. Trust and Honorable Louis A. Scarcella from the E.D.N.Y. Bankruptcy Court at the Nassau County Bar Association. The panel discussed the benefits of mediation in bankruptcy cases and in resolving disputes.
  • On September 24 2015, Andrew M. Thaler was sworn in as Director and Chair of Theodore Roosevelt Inn of Court's Mentor Program.
  • On January 14, 2015, Andrew M. Thaler presented a program for the Nassau County Bar Association's Matrimonial Law Committee. The program explored a variety of different issues that arise when bankruptcy law and matrimonial law intersect.
  • On November 18, 2014, Andrew M. Thaler presented a program for the Nassau Lawyers entitled The Top 10 Things to Know About Bankruptcy. The program was aimed towards providing attorneys unfamiliar with bankruptcy a general overview of the law and procedures in this area.
  • On October 29, 2014, Andrew M. Thaler participated as a panelist in a program at the Nassau Bar Association entitled Making the Choice: Mediation or Litigation? The program was presented by the Alternative Dispute Resolution and Community Relations & Public Education Committees.
  • On October 15, 2014, Andrew M. Thaler, together with Jil Mazer-Marino of Meyer, Suozzi, English, & Klein, P.C., co-presented a program for the New York City Bar Association's Committee on Bankruptcy and Corporate Reorganization. The program focused on the issues that chapter 7 trustees face in administering business cases converted from chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code.
  • On May 29, 2014, Andrew M. Thaler participated in a mock mediation presentation at the Nassau County Bar Association entitled Family Business Divorce: What Every Lawyer Should Know About Mediation. The presentation was part of a two-day program hosted by the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee.
  • On April 17, 2014, Andrew M. Thaler led the discussion in an Attorney Round Table program addressing how the internet has affected the practice of law.
  • On March 26, 2014, Andrew M. Thaler co-presented a program sponsored by the Long Beach Lawyers' Association and The Nassau Academy of Law entitled The Top 10 Things to Know About Bankruptcy.
